No Use Empty West is pleased to be supporting national Empty Homes Week 2021 running from 15-21 February 2021.  #EmptyHomesWeek2021

The week is organised by Action on Empty Homes. Empty Property week is a chance to inform the public of the success of our service and advise readers what else needs to be done.

The Empty Property Unit in Private Housing brings back into use around 500 privately owned properties a year (537 in 2018/19, 499 in 2019/20), through an established process of encouragement, enablement, enforcement and making owners aware of the ultimate recourse to Compulsory Purchase Order action.

The team also deals with many nuisance cases linked to privately owned empty properties such as clearing waste and securing properties against unauthorised access .

Bringing empties back into use impacts the people of Bristol by reducing crime and antisocial behaviour, providing more much needed residential accommodation whilst improving the neighbourhood value and appearance.

Do you have an empty property in a reasonable condition that you would like to rent out?  Please contact our Private Renting Team. We offer a free service to help you find a suitable tenant.  Email private.renting@bristol.gov.uk to find out how this could work for you.

Did you know there is a change to how you will be charged council tax for long-term empty properties of 10 year plus?

  • If your home has been empty for 2 years or more, you may be charged an empty homes premium of up to 100% of your council tax bill. You will pay this on top of your council tax.
  • If your property has been empty for 5 years you may be charged 200%
  • From1 April 2021, if your property has been empty for 10 years this will increase to 300%.

The charges have been approved with the aim of reducing the number of long-term empty properties in our area, so we can get as many as possible back into use for local people.
