Empty Property Week 2011: Project Two

Summary. Our second property near Bath is being helped back into useful accommodation. This is a detached cottage located in a village close to Bath.  The property what has been in the ownership of the same family for several generations. It became empty when the current owner’s uncle died, at which time he set to renovate this property.  The cottage is approximately 400 years old, although it does have a modern extension.  It needs to be cleared of items and modernised before it can be re-occupied.  The current owner is undertaking to carry out the renovation works himself.  Unfortunately the property suffered from a water leak following the severe winter in 2010 – 2011, which affected the kitchen. The garden is in good order as it is currently being maintained by a neighbour, who in return makes use of it.

Watch the progress in the photographs here. Read back on the story of improvements, below:
  • 5 – 10 December 2011. Work carried out (Empty Homes Week).
  • 25 November 2011. We arranged to visit the property to meet the owner along with a representative from Cleanslate to agree a programme of works to start in Empty Property Week. We agree to concentrate on the clearing the house of items to enable the owner to make progress with the renovation works he is planning to undertake.  Owner was pleased to be able to use the opportunity to not only clear the property, but also offer work experience to the volunteers at Cleanslate. We agreed to clear and clean the property, together with stripping out the old bathroom fittings and water-damaged kitchen work tops. It was also agreed to carry out some external works to the property to improve the appearance by boarding up the broken glass in the porch and also take down a dilapidated porch canopy.
  • 10 November 2011 We met the owner again at the property to explain the progress we had made with the Empty Homes Project, and to confirm that we would like the opportunity to use his property to promote the No Use Empty West website during Empty Homes Week in December.
  • 20 October 2011. This was the initial meeting with the owner of this property to discuss his aims to bring his property back into use and the problems he was experiencing that might be preventing him in making progress. Since the owner is renovating the property in his spare time any help such as general labour to clear and tidy the house would be of benefit.
